Did you ever catch yourself cogitating in front of the granola bar aisle, looking for the perfect vegan granola bars, not knowing which one to choose from all brands available? I certainly did. The more choices are presented to us, the more confusing it gets. How much fat is too much fat? What is this ingredient? What is the daily recommended intake of sugar? The list can go on and on!
In this week’s blog, I will give you a few tips to keep in mind when you go grocery shopping. Also, I’ll provide a list of the best options on the market. As a bonus, I’ll share with you a delicious vegan granola bar recipe made with real ingredients.
What Makes a Granola Bar Healthy?
First you have to look at the ingredient list. If the list is too long and you don’t recognize half of the words, it’s a bad sign. Research brands that use whole ingredients.
- Protein and Fiber Content
Fiber and protein will make you feel full. According to the FDA, we should eat around 25 grams of fiber per day (based on a diet of 2000 calories). Foods that have more than 5 grams of fiber per serving are considered high fiber foods. As for protein, The Food and Nutrition Board recommends a daily allowance of 0,8mg/kg body weight.
- Sugar Content
Most of the granola bars that you’ll find at the grocery store are packed with sugar. Opt for bars that are naturally sweetened. Look for bars that contain less than 6 grams of sugar.
